Sonia Prado Kjergaard, age 67, passed away on December 8, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 1, 1953 to the late Nora Sanchez and Tomas Prado, Jr. of Puerto Rico.
Sonia moved to Springfield in the late 1970’s and began to work as a teacher at Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School, from which she was retired. She worked with bi-lingual students and took extreme pride in her work. She touched her students’ lives and gave them much encouragement. Sonia was such an extraordinarily gifted and accomplished woman, who graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and obtained her master’s degree in her field. Sonia’s talents go beyond the pale. Not only was she an outstanding teacher, but she could sing, play the guitar, draw, paint, write calligraphy and could create the most beautiful arts and crafts. She was also a wonderful photographer, who had the innate ability to capture the essence of her subjects. She was a true artist, in every sense of the word. Sonia was a ray of sunshine to all who knew her. Her laugh was infectious and she knew how to make things fun. She was generous and kind. She loved life and most importantly of all, she had strived to be the best teacher she could possibly be and took enormous pride in what she did. We know this world is a little less brilliant without her in it, but the wonderful memories we have of her will bring us comfort and most assuredly make us smile.
Sonia is survived by her brother, Ricardo Prado and his partner Lily, niece, Brenda, nephew, Ricardo Jr., great-nieces, Veronika and Victoria; her aunt and uncle, Nydia and Louis along with her cousins, Diana and Evelyn and countless others who loved her and whose lives she touched.
For those who wish memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
