Simon "Lou" Flanders

March 16, 1952 — October 9, 2022

East Longmeadow – Simon “Lou” Flanders, 70, passed away on October 9, 2022.
He was born in Montpelier, Vermont on March 16, 1952, the son of the late Lawrence Flanders and Lucille (Chouinard) Wisniewski. He was a Class of 1971 graduate of Springfield Trade High School and proudly served in the Peace Corps in Morocco from 1986 – 1987. Lou previously lived in Oregon for thirty years and kept in close contact with childhood friends. He was the former owner operator of Marshal’s Delicatessen in Cottage Grove, Oregon and was previously employed as a social worker for the state of Oregon, the former Abdow’s Restaurant as well as two local lumber yards in Western MA. He enjoyed attending family reunions for sixty years, old cars, motorcycles, fishing, going to movies based on history and attending car shows, swap meets and cruise nights. He retired from Lane Transit in Oregon and came back East, remaining an avid fan of the Oregon Ducks at the University of Oregon, the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins. He also had a favorite canine companion “Chopper”.
Lou is survived by his sister Nancy Pirosseno and her husband Gilbert of Springfield, MA; his niece Robin Pirosseno of Palmer, MA; nephew Phillip Pirosseno of Westport, MA; many cousins and Erica a special person who entered his life this past year and brought him great joy. The family is indebted to Scott Roberts, his long-time friend, for his support and assistance especially in the last three years. A special thanks to his cousin Diana Booth Duff who was always there for Lou especially these last years and we also want to thank the nursing staff, and all the employees who work on the New York wing of the JGS facility and the administrative staff for their continued kindness, hard work and support while he was there. Lou will be missed for his wit, great personality and his caring attitude to all he came in contact with.
From his cemetery marker: “BE HAPPY BECAUSE IT DOES NOT LAST FOREVER”
Lou would have wanted everyone to read his favorite poem titled “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas as he ended his journey with Parkinson’s.
Sadly, he was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Flanders.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
A graveside service was held in Baptist Hill Cemetery, East Longmeadow, MA.
New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements. Please visit Lou’s memorial page at www.nefcc.net for expressions of sympathy.
