Springfield - Shirley was a wonderful, caring lady who had, in so many ways, a beautiful life. She was born in 1929 to Charles F. Shearer and Ellen Mary Flahive who lived in Easthampton.
She attended local schools and graduated from Saint Michael’s High School. Shirley was a homemaker and worked side-by-side with her late husband, Francis. She did secretarial and bookkeeping work at the Holiday Gulf Service Station in Springfield for more than 20 years.
Shirley never minced words with people and always spoke her mind. Being decent, fair, and generous with others were core principles that guided her through life. She instilled in her children the importance of education and caring for others. Shirley constantly supported her only son, David, who earned two doctorate degrees.
During her retirement, she worked with Home Instead in Holyoke and did volunteer work with the Red Cross at Baystate Medical Center. Shirley loved the ocean. She took almost weekly trips for many years that alternated between Old Saybrook, Stonington, Scarsborough Beach, and Watch Hill with her son.
Shirley is predeceased by her loving husband who passed in 1995.
She is survived by her son, David, and daughter, Nancy, who lives in Paris. Shirley is also survived by her sisters, Sylvia Gallagher of Easthampton, Enestine Favaro of Northampton, and her brother, Edward Shearer of Venice, Florida, as well as three grandchildren: Cosima, Marina, and Adrian who live in Paris.
Shirley will never be forgotten and will live in our hearts forever. She truly represented the good side of humanity.
