West Springfield – Robert J. Machia, 80, passed away at home surrounded by his beloved family on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.
He was born in Springfield on October 24, 1937, a son of the late George and Madeline (Dempsy) Machia.
He started his long career at the Union News as a paper boy when he was fifteen years old and retired as a compositor fifty-five years later. He met his future wife there where she was a telemarketer. Bob loved playing baseball and was once scouted by the Boston Red Sox. He retired from the West Springfield Special Police after many years of service to the town and also enjoyed working on cars. He will be remembered as a hardworking devoted husband and father.
He is survived by his wife Marguerite (Daigneault) Machia, his sons; Michael (Mildred) of West Springfield, Wayne and his fiancée Lori Disisto of Agawam, daughters; Lynne Dempsey (William) of Agawam, Karen Hoynoski of VA, and Madeline Presz (Timothy) of Chicopee. He also leaves his brother George Machia of Florida, and his sister, Joan Page (George) of CT, eight grandchildren; Nichole, Timothy and Kimberly Machia, Evan and Ryan Hoynoski, Christopher Dempsey and Brendan and Chase Presz, three great grandchildren; Aurora Hoynoski, Raiden and Niamh Machia.
All services are private. New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements.
