SPRINGFIELD -On April 20, 2016 Rachel Barbara Tarbell Shultis passed away after 91 years of living with a generous heart and kindly spirit. She was born September 12, 1924 in Salem Depot, New Hampshire, but soon after moved to Pittsfield Massachusetts, and she graduated from Pittsfield High School. On November 1, 1947 she married Harold Viggo Post Shultis and they were together until his passing on May 22, 2001. They had three children; a son James Samuel Shultis, 66, of Springfield, a daughter Susan Shultis Sacco, who passed away March 2013, and a son Steven Tarbell Shultis, 51, of Springfield. The family moved to Springfield in 1957 and she remained a Springfield resident until her death. In addition to her two sons, Rachel is survived by 14 grandchildren scattered from coast to coast and overseas and by 18 great-grandchildren. Rachel could almost always be found with a book (or, in the last few years, a Kindle) in her hands, but also enjoyed membership in the Tuesday Morning Music Club and regular Monday evening get-togethers with her friends for dinner and dominoes. She loved traveling around the USA and exploring new and different cuisines. Rachel was a long-time faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016 in the LDS chapel at 376 Maple St., Springfield at 6:00 PM. The private interment will be at Pittsfield Cemetery. New England Funeral & Cremation Center, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements. Visit
