Mildred Louise “Jie” (Howard) Johnson, 89, of Springfield, MA, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at home surrounded by family. Mildred was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, on February 14, 1934, to the late Dudley Howard Sr. and Bertile (Tillman) Howard. She attended Alexander High School in Brookhaven, MS, where she was a member of the basketball team. After leaving Brookhaven, MS, and Lansing, MI, Mildred moved to Springfield, MA. She was a longtime employee and retired from Savage Arms in Westfield, MA. Mildred was a God-fearing woman, who was raised in Galilee A.M.E. Church in Brookhaven, MS. She became a member of St. Mark C.M.E. Church after moving to Springfield, where she was known as “Mother Johnson”. She enjoyed going to church, cooking, watching Lifetime, horror movies and Family Feud (Steve Harvey), phone conversations with family and friends, her “special trips”, and spending time with her sons, family, and friends. Mildred was predeceased by her husband, W. M. Johnson, sons, David, Robert, and Melvin, siblings, Dudley Howard Jr, Robert Lee Howard, William Bishop Howard, Ethel Bland, Mary Kelly, and sister-in-law, Eula Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memories five sons: Paul Johnson Sr., Charles Johnson, Thomas Johnson, all of Springfield, MA, Gregory Johnson (Anjanette) of Atlanta, GA, and Kenny Johnson of Boston, MA, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 12:00 PM at the New England Funeral & Cremation Center located at 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA 01108. Inurnment will be held Monday, January 8, 2024 at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will precede the service Wednesday morning beginning at 11:00 AM.
