It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Copeland, a beloved partner, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Michael departed this world peacefully on July 16, 2026, at Baystate Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was 76 years old. Born on December 18, 1949, in Swansea, Massachusetts, Michael was the cherished son of Donalda and William Copeland. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable sense of humor and an innate ability to bring joy to those around him. These qualities would remain with him throughout his life, endearing him to everyone he met. Michael was a proud veteran who served his country with honor as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He completed three tours in Vietnam, demonstrating courage and resilience in the face of adversity. After his military service, he dedicated his life to protecting and serving his community as a police officer in Ludlow, Massachusetts. Known for his compassion, fairness, and infectious humor, Michael was a respected and beloved figure in the community until his retirement in 2005. For over four decades, Michael shared his life with his devoted partner, Brenda DeGray. Together, they built a family steeped in love and laughter. They raised four children: Heidi-Ann Courtney of Wesley Chapel, FL; Jennifer Pete of South Hadley, MA; Troy Copeland of Southampton, MA; and step-daughter Renae Mathe of Pepperell, MA. Michael's legacy lives on through his nine adoring grandchildren: Gage Terlik, Angelina, Courtney Gianna Courtney, Mason Mathe, Brady Pete Quinn Mathe, Kale Copeland, Delaney Copeland and Kellen Copeland each of whom he cherished deeply. An avid car enthusiast, Michael took great pride in his custom Corvette, which he loved to showcase. He enjoyed spending leisurely days on the golf course with his son and grandson, even if losing to them was a frequent, albeit laughable, occurrence. Michael and Brenda shared a unique pastime of visiting various Dunkin' Donuts shops throughout Massachusetts and South Carolina, savoring both the coffee and the company. Michael was known far and wide for his quick wit and warm smile. He could lighten any mood with a well-timed joke and was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether through wise advice or with just the right tool. His presence was a balm to those who knew him, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness and humor that will be deeply missed. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Baystate Medical Center S3 Oncology Unit for their compassionate care during Michael's final days. As per Michael’s wishes, a private committal service with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam to celebrate his life and recognize his faithful service to our country. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Michael.
