Florence - Julie Mazo passed away on September 15, 2016 at the age of 83, after several months of declining health.
Julie was the beloved mother of Alisa Posesorski and her late husband Mel, and the late Jonathan Bekoff and his partner Rose Sinclair. She was the sister of Robert Mazo, and predeceased by her parents Nathan and Rose Mazo. Julie was born in Camden, New Jersey, and lived in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Indiana before moving with her family to Montreal, Canada in 1965. She moved back to the U.S. in 1979, living in California and Virginia before settling in Massachusetts.
She was a mediator and facilitator, organizational consultant, teacher, an educational administrator, entrepreneur, and an inspiration and mentor to many, and so much more. After her retirement she volunteered for many years in the third world, nurturing her deep love for Africa, and in post-hurricane Louisiana. She spent her last years happily as a very valued and involved member of the Pathways Cohousing Community in Florence, where her wisdom and calm presence touched the lives of so many people. Her friends and neighbors there have been enormously helpful and supportive during her last months.
Special thanks to Chris, Pat Riggs, Andree Leblanc-Ross and Rebecca from Cooley Dickinson Palliative Care and Hospice Services, and Drs. Feinland and Zesiger, and for the services from Highland Valley Elder Services.
Julie wished to be cremated with no funeral or visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pathways next month. Donations in Julie’s memory may be made to the Temple Forest Monastery through the Jeta Grove Foundation (
