Joshua Wimes
October 27, 1939 — November 30, 2020
Joshua Wimes, 81, transitioned peacefully on November 30th, 2020 in Raleigh, NC from a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was the son of the late Grige Wimes and Sarah (Ruffin) Wimes of Moultrie, GA and the 4th of 10 children. At any early age he moved to Florida and worked in an orange grove.
Josh relocated to Springfield, MA in the early 1960’s, where he was a long-time resident. He was an employee of Pioneer Valley Transit Authority for 33 years where he retired in 2004. Josh was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Holyoke, MA. He later joined New Creation Discipleship Ministries where he served as the first male Senior Door Keeper. He was a member of the Big Boys Club and enjoyed spending time with his friends and playing pool. He enjoyed being the life of the party, fishing, and being a part-time mechanic at Dave’s Motors.
He is predeceased by his brothers Wesley James Sr. of Springfield, MA. and Grige Wimes Jr. of Moultrie, GA.; his sisters Martha (Wimes) Fuller of Moultrie GA, Rebecca (Wimes) Spradley of Springfield, MA and Rachel (Wimes) Powell of Atlanta, GA and his daughter Theresa Smiley of Newport News, VA. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Pearlene (Hunter) Wimes of Raleigh, NC; his brother David Wimes (Eunice); sisters Priscilla Bolden of Springfield, MA and Sarah Clayton and Virginia Wimes of Moultrie, GA; his children: Larry Egerton, Pearlie Marie (Egerton) Pinkett and Rosalind Jackson of Springfield, MA; Rodney Egerton of Ware, MA, Keisha (Egerton) Chapman (Sandy, III) of Raleigh, NC, Kiyasha (Richardson) Battle of Pensacola, FL, and Joshua Johnson; 18 grand-children,19 great grand-children and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who celebrate his life.
Josh lived life to the fullest and was known by many. He left this earth peacefully, knowing he was loved and taken well care of until his last breath by his wife and cherished family members and friends. They were all instrumental in caring for him and will be forever appreciated for their love and support.
Funeral Services for Mr. Wimes will be held on December 8, 2020 beginning with a walk-through visitation from 10–11AM and a private family service at 11AM at New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery. Masks and social distancing are required.
