Jerome (Jerry) Albert Tompkins, 93, of Suffield, died September 2, 2020 after a brief illness.
He was born in Springfield on March 28, 1927 to the late Albert and Bernadette Tompkins. He graduated from Tech High and attended Norwich University, leaving to proudly serve his country during WWII as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps, where he was trained in electronics and received a commendation for installing an 800-tube radar set that was instrumental in guiding the Berlin Airlift.
He worked as a master toolmaker at Hamilton Standard, Van Norman, Pine Meadow and various other shops.
He was honored as a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite in 1963.
Jerry was an excellent marksman, winning countless awards and prizes for competitive target shooting. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, photography, playing keno and building model gliders.
Jerry was preceded by his sisters Marian Burke and Alberta Rae, brother Charles, and recently Tim Dunn.
Jerry is survived by sons, Gary of Gilford NH, Mark of Ludlow and Craig of Longmeadow, and granddaughters: Sarah, Michelle and Laura; family friends Drew Dunn, John Sherwin and Paul Desrosiers.
There will be a military service at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery 1390 Main St Agawam at 11am on September 14, 2020. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines Fund in memory of Jerry Tompkins in care of American Legion Post 80, 566 Enfield St, Enfield, CT 06082.
