Irene P. Scanlon

August 24, 1929 — February 9, 2018

Irene P. Scanlon died on February 9, 2018 at Mount Saint Vincent Care Center in Holyoke where she received wonderful care.
Born in Three Rivers, MA, Irene was one of ten children of Aldona and Leo Potvin.

She is survived by two sisters Jeanne and Doris Potvin, both residing in CA. She was predeceased by brothers Omer, Albert, Ernest, Leo Jr. and Roger, and two sisters, Jeannette and Leona. Irene grew up in Springfield, graduating from the High School of Commerce and later becoming a long-time resident of Agawam. Irene leaves two children, Erin (Scanlon) Shepard and husband Robert of Agawam and Timothy Scanlon and wife Maria of Granby, CT., five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Irene primarily made her living selling women’s clothing with Beeline Fashions in the 1960’s and 1970’s and then for many years as owner of “Irene’s Closet”, a women’s clothing store, making wonderful friends along the way. She was also active in the Agawam Repertory Theatre and other theatre groups, receiving awards for her performances. Many remember Irene for her artsy ability in anything she put her mind to and was also known in Agawam as the “cow lady” with Bessie the life-sized cow on her front lawn. In later years Irene enjoyed tag sales throughout Agawam and surrounding towns and craft fairs looking for unique treasures, but mostly good conversation.

Visitation will be held from 10-11AM on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Faith Bible Church, 370 Shoemaker Lane, Agawam followed by a service at 11 AM and burial in Hillcrest Park Cemetery. New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements. www.nefcc.net
