Helen A. Lagunowich

SPRINGFIELD – Helen “Chickie” Ann (Chehowsky) Lagunowich, 91, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2016 at Wingate at Springfield. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and gregarious grandma, and she will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. She had a travelers’ spirit, touring Europe, Hawaii, and the continental USA multiple times, bringing back countless pictures, souvenirs, and memories. But her favorite place of all was Walt Disney World. Serving as the family “travel agent”, she was well known to the telephone agents of the Disney Company as she carefully arranged the details of those wonderful summer vacations with her grandchildren. Born in Springfield to the late Stephen and Stephania (Switak) Chehowsky, she was predeceased by her three sisters Elizabeth Pierzchala, Sophie Szczebak, and Stella Juba, but leaves her husband of 69 years, Alexander Lagunowich; a son Alexander Lagunowich, Jr. and his wife Diane of Hampden; 2 grandchildren, Corey and his wife Karen, and Sarah; 4 great-grandchildren, Ian, Camden, Hayden, and Sasha; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Wingate for their care of Chickie in her final months. Donations in Chickie’s memory may be made to the Special Olympics of Massachusetts, Greater Springfield Area to further their mission in the life of her granddaughter, Sarah and her fellow athletes. Private services will be held at New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA with burial to follow in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.
