George W. O'Brien

November 1, 1950 — September 30, 2024

George W. O’Brien, 73, a lifelong resident of Springfield, MA, was called to eternal rest with his strong faith in God after a 3-year battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family in his home. George leaves his devoted wife of 46 years, Mary (Heffernan) O’Brien and was the proud parent of three children: William (Bill) O’Brien and wife Courtney, daughter Katie O’Brien and partner Jamie, and daughter, Tammi O’Brien. He loved his seven grandchildren: Pattrick, Natalia, Lauren, Donovan, Rian, Harper, and Hudson and was proud of their accomplishments. He is predeceased by his parents Harold O’Brien and Helen (Ewing) O’Brien, and brother John O'Brien. He also leaves behind several cherished brothers in-law, sisters in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a Mail Handler for 40 years for the U.S. Postal Service. After retirement he enjoyed working part time at Forest Park. He was an avid Red Sox and NY Giants fan and boxing fan. He was proud of his years as the owner of Greyhound race dogs and horses with his triumphant winning horse Dancing Melanie. The family extends a special thank you to his cousins Linda (Murphy) Herschuk and Jimmy Ewing, and dear friends Rocky, Pat S., Jamie C., Tom Fitz, Ed T., and Danny M. who supported George and his family through the end of his journey. We would like to thank Dr. Farooqui and the staff at the Sister Caritas Cancer Center and Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gift of Light program, patient services Fund to support current cancer patients through the Mercy Sisters of Caritas Cancer Center in Springfield. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 10:00AM at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA. The family will receive friends from 9:00-9:45AM at the church prior to the mass. New England Funeral & Cremation Center, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements.
