Springfield-Eugene A. Korell, 80, died April 6, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. Born in Springfield to Oscar and Erdine (Jones) Korell, he was a Springfield resident for most of his life and most recently resided in Ludlow. Eugene served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a 1945 graduate of Technical High School, a 1949 graduate of Springfield College and received his Masters in Education from Westfield State College. He taught at Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School and retired in 1997 after twenty-one years of service. He was also owner and president of Home Television Sales & Service in Springfield, retiring in 2002. Eugene was past president and member of the Reserve Officer’s Association, Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy in Denver, CO, a member of the Iwo Jima Veterans Association and the Officers Club. He was predeceased by his father; his wife, Jessie (Smith) Korell and three siblings, Howie, Ollie and Ruth Korell. He will be missed by his mother, Erdine (Jones) Korell of Springfield to whom Eugene was a dedicated son and caregiver; a son, Eugene Korell of Ludlow; two sisters, Norma Morton of Ludlow and Ellie Dudek of Hudson, NH; a grandchild, Anita Korell Suarez of Agawam and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves several retired friends, especially his coffee group, whom his son thanks very much for their participation and friendship in his life. The funeral will be Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC, 25 Mill St., Springfield proceeding to the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery for burial with full military honors at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will precede the funeral on Thursday from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield MA 01104-2396.
