Elmer E. Masters

August 11, 1917 — October 11, 2011

West Springfield- Elmer Edward Masters, 94, of West Springfield passed away peacefully
at home Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 2011. Elmer was born Aug. 11, 1917 in Monkton, VT.
to William and Lula Masters. He graduated High School and then enlisted in the Army. He
then graduated college and married his late wife Catherine Masters on Oct. 28, 1938. With
the start of World War II, Elmer gladly re-enlisted to proudly once again serve his country.
Elmer and Catherine had one child, a daughter, Constance Masters Ryll, of Greenville, SC.
He worked as a machine operator at Monsanto for 38 years before retiring. He belonged to
the Lions Club, VFW, The Disabled American Veterans and The National Order of the
Trench Rats, which he truly cherished. He and his beloved wife Catherine celebrated 64
years of marriage before her passing in 2002.
Elmer had three grandchildren, Heather Masters Ackourey of West Springfield, MA.,
Jason Ryll of West Springfield, MA and Erik Ryll of Somers, CT., along with five great
grandchildren, Victoria, Austin, Johnny, Ella and Grayson. Elmer wasn't a demanding
individual, he was easily pleased and grateful for the smallest of kindnesses. He was a
wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. Elmer was loved by all who knew
him, and was known as "grampa". He truly valued his home, family, faith and country.
His favorite things to enjoy were watching the Boston Red Sox, eating strawberry short-
cake and finishing his life surrounded with family. Elmer Masters was the best man I have
ever known, and will be deeply missed.
Funeral services with full military honors were held on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 9:00 am at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery where he was laid to rest with his wife.
New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements.
