Catherine M. Grondin (nee Roberts), 79, a lifelong resident of Springfield, MA, was called home on June 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Cathy was born on February 19, 1946, in Chelmsford, England to the late Paul and Catherine Roberts. Cathy arrived at Ellis Island with her parents at the age of 2 years old.
Cathy was known to most as “Meme” or “Mems.” She was known for her quirky phrases, her eclectic style, thrift store and tag sales, and her love for her family. She had a huge heart and loved everyone she met. She had many friends she also thought of as family. It didn’t matter to her if she knew you for years or had just met you, you were already part of the family. Her home was a haven for those who needed a place to rest their head, a need to talk, or for a warm meal. She always made you feel welcome. She had a strong faith in God, and this showed through her everyday life. Cathy was so giving of herself that she looked for nothing in return.
Cathy was happiest when around her family. She was proud of each one of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She would look forward to seeing everyone together at birthday parties, picnics, and the holidays, especially at Christmas. That was what a happy life was like for her.
Cathy leaves behind the love of her life of 60 years, Gerard Grondin, Four children: Theresa Shea and her husband Kevin of Westfield, Cathy Shea and her husband Thomas of Southwick, Steven Grondin and his wife Holly of Becket, and Gerard Grondin and his wife Elliann of Feeding Hills; Fourteen grandchildren: Kirsten, Kathleen M, Kara, Brendan, Ryanne, Kaily, Ashley, Nathaniel, Bart, Kathleen S, Morgan, Madison, Chelsea, and Jacoby; along with twelve great grandchildren. Five siblings: Angela Avery and her husband Gordon of Springfield, John Roberts and his wife Cheryl of South Carolina, brothers Clifton, Armand, and William Roberts as well as many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her lifelong friends, Collette and Celine.
Cathy was a beacon of light to everyone she met. We lost a beautiful soul that day, but heaven gained a beautiful angel. We will all miss you “Mems.” Until we meet again.
