Longmeadow – Barbara E. (Hutcheons) Buffum passed away peacefully at Wingate of Hampden on September 21, 2017.
Barbara was born in Springfield, the daughter of the late John and Dorothy (Newton) Hutcheons.
She attended local schools and was a 1953 Commerce Graduate.
Barbara and her husband Richard met at a Saturday night dance at Wesley Methodist Church on November 18, 1950 at age 15. After he got up the courage to ask Barbara to dance (to Patty Page’s Tennessee Waltz) they never parted and have been married for 61 beautiful years. Barbara worked for many years as a medical secretary in pediatrician’s offices. She was loved for her unusual sense of humor. An event that took place for a few minutes could take her a half hour to describe and make us laugh the whole time. She loved dogs, especially Cocker Spaniels. She also enjoyed tap dancing with the girls at the Chicopee Senior Center, and she was a dedicated hockey mom. But Barbara’s most favorite thing to do was to go shopping which she did for a few hours each day.
In addition to her loving husband she leaves her son Richard Scott Buffum of Holyoke, sisters Elizabeth Hervieux of Springfield, Dorothy Bliven and husband William of Ashborn, VA, Martha Waite and husband William of Cambridge, NY, her grandson Jonathan Sances and great granddaughter Juliet Sances of Chicopee, son in law James Bell of Chicopee and her Cocker Spaniel Hutch.
Barbara was predeceased by her daughter Cynthia Bell, grandson Stephen Sances and sisters Theresa Gould and Edith Jasmin.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 4 – 7PM at New England funeral & Cremation Center, LLC, 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA. Burial will be at a later date.
Our family would like to express our appreciation to the wonderful staff at Wingate of Hampden and also hospice.
