WEST SPRINGFIELD-Avalee S. Bovey died June 5, 2013 in Agawam, MA. She was 93. A native of Ohio, born April 15, 1920 in Climax, the third of five children of the late Burr and Dottie (Brooks) Shipman, she attended the one-room school in Climax and was graduated from Iberia High School in 1938. She was employed by the North Electric Co. two years. She enlisted as a Spar in the United States Coast Guard in 1944, trained in Palm Beach, FL and was subsequently stationed in San Francisco’s Market Street Spar Station. She attained the rating of ship’s cook, Second Class, was discharged in 1946 and married the late Allan E. Bovey in 1949. They lived in Traer, IA for a time, moved to Marion, OH, then Springfield, MA. They moved to Galion in 2004. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Hesperia Lodge 340 AF&AM, Traer, IA. Avalee is survived by a son, David Bovey and his wife Kathleen Fisher of West Springfield, MA, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who live in the Galion, Climax and Mt. Gilead communities. She was predeceased, besides her husband and parents, by a sister, Aldeane Pfahler and three brothers, Burr Shipman Jr., Wayne and Oris Shipman. Funeral services with full military honors for Avalee and Allan Bovey will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 in the chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA at 3:00PM.
