Arthur L. Jackson, 90, passed away on December 7, 2020, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, of complications from COVID-19.
He was born in Harold, KY to the late Arthur L. and Byrd (Layne) Jackson of Ashland, KY.
Arthur moved to the Berkshires and later to Holyoke in 1965. Arthur was a retired professor of Biology at Holyoke Community College from 1965 to 1993. He served on the Board of Directors of the Holyoke Civic Symphony and also served as a volunteer usher at The Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, MA from 1994 to 2017. He always claimed to be a Kentucky hillbilly who happened to love classical music and grand opera. After College he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp in Korea where he also taught English to groups of professional Koreans seeking visas to come to the U.S. for study. Arthur enjoyed tending to his flower garden and watching the birds. He also loved the beach and was an avid shell collector.
He was a devoted friend to many. Arthur was predeceased by his sisters Ruth (Jackson) Pinson and Virginia (Jackson) Dixon, and his brothers Paul and William Jackson.
He is survived by his sister Helen (Jackson) Lazear of Lexington, KY, his sister-in-law Glenys (Keene) Jackson of Ashland, KY, and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by his good friends and “adoptive family” Bob and Diane Gosselin of Westfield, MA, and their daughters Danielle and Sarah. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held on December 21, 2020, at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at 9:00AM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holyoke Civic Symphony, 303 Homestead Ave, Holyoke, MA 01040, or the Shriners Hospital for Children.
