Angelo Correale Jr.

EAST LONGMEADOW– Educator, coach, community servant, father, family man and East Longmeadow Lions Club Citizen of the Year in 1998, Angelo “Angie” Correale Jr., 86, passed away April 12, 2014 at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke.
A veteran of the United States Army WWII, Mr. Correale was born April 27, 1927 to the late Angelo and Jennie (Bialecki) Correale. An Amherst High School graduate, he attended Boston University and obtained his BA and M.Ed from Springfield College where he was affectionately known as “The Sunderland Ghost” when playing football and is now recognized as one of the top running backs in the college’s football history. “Angie” was a standout outfielder on the baseball team, hitting .480 in 1949, a record that still stands. He subsequently was inducted in the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a past president of the Springfield College Alumni Council, recipient of the school’s prestigious Edward Norris Tarbell Medallion for his service to his alma mater and a 15 year volunteer assistant football coach. Mr. Correale was a teacher, football coach and athletic director at East Longmeadow High School, an assistant principal at Birchland Park Middle School, principal at Center School, Pleasantview School, Mountain View School and Meadow Brook School in East Longmeadow.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Stadler) Correale; devoted sons David Correale and his wife Deborah of West Chester, PA and James Correale and his wife Helen of West Wareham, MA; five beloved grandchildren: Jennifer, Stephanie, David, Rachel and Kevin as well as many other family members. Mr. Correale is predeceased by his daughter Nancy and brother Herman Correale.

Mr. Correale’s funeral will be held Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 12:45 PM at New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA. Burial with military honors to follow at Hillcrest Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until the time of service.
